Built-in Car turntables

The built-in turntables actually just sit on top of the floor. The area around the turntable is simply raised. This makes the turntable appear integrated into the floor, but in practice it is placed on top. The reason we do this is that it is more cost-effective, not only during installation but also during dismantling. We have installed turntables fully embedded in the floor before, with concrete poured around them, but if it’s not necessary, it doesn’t have to be done. Because the turntable is round, it is difficult to create a perfect connection from the floor to the turntable. We solve this easily by placing moisture-resistant MDF around the turntable and routing out the circle. This way, during dismantling, you also don’t need to pour concrete to close up the round hole again.
In some situations, it is not possible to raise the floor. For example, at F1rst Motors in Dubai, we cut out the floor to create a seamless transition with the rest of the showroom. In this case, the showroom flows directly into the photo studio.
The built-in turntable can therefore be supplied in two ways: placed on the floor with the surrounding area raised, or recessed into the floor with concrete poured around it. The option with concrete is more expensive, but it provides the best result when the space is directly connected to, for example, the showroom. In addition to the turntable, there is another factor to consider: the motor unit. By default, it protrudes a few centimeters above the turntable. If this is not desirable, the motor unit can also be recessed into the floor. In that case, the thickness of the motor unit is important, as it is approximately 10 cm thick. This means a hole of at least 10 cm deep must be made in the floor.

Options

If the studio floor connects to, for example, the showroom, then a level solution is the most attractive. In that case, a hole must be made in the concrete. In new construction, you can take this into account and only pour the space after the turntable or the concrete pouring ring has been placed. Our preference is to first place the ring, then pour the concrete, and finally install the turntable. Otherwise, concrete may end up underneath the turntable, which is not desirable.

Example

The simplest solution is to place moisture-resistant MDF on a flat, stable floor. Then we cut out the circle and place the turntable in the center. If the motor unit also needs to be recessed below the surface, it will have to be cut out. This can be a bit of a job, but it is better to cut out only the motor unit partially than the full 25m² of the turntable.
